Installing Alpagua on Android

Alpagua is not on Google Play yet: it installs from its APK, downloaded from alpagua.com. There are three, one per processor:

Installing

  1. On the phone or tablet, download the APK from alpagua.com.
  2. Open it, from the browser's downloads or the Files app.
  3. Android says that, for your security, this source may not install apps: Settings, allow from this source (the browser, or Files), then back. It asks once per app that opens an APK.
  4. Install. Play Protect may warn about an app it does not know: install anyway (More details › Install anyway).

Then you can take the permission back, in Settings › Apps › Special app access › Install unknown apps.

Updating

Download and open the new APK the same way: it installs over the previous version and keeps your data. Android refuses an APK of an older version, or one not signed with Alpagua's key.

Checking a download

On alpagua.com, the SHA-256 link under the download gives the APK's checksum, <file>.sha256. Android has no tool to compute it: check it on a computer, as the Linux, macOS or Windows guide says, before copying the APK to the device. Android checks the signature of the APK anyway: an update installs only when it is signed with the same key as the installed app.

Where your data is

In the app's private storage, which other apps cannot read. Your notes, documents and skills are in the Alpagua location of the Files app, where other apps can open them. The API keys and tokens are in the Android Keystore.

Uninstalling

Long press the icon, App info, Uninstall. Android deletes the data with the app: conversations, notes, documents, skills. Export first (Settings › Backup and transfer) if you may want them back, and keep the archive outside the Alpagua location.
